Holy Trinity student, Christine Yang, shares her voice with leaders of tomorrow

As we welcomed our OCSB students to the 2021-2022 school year, we were delighted to hear their summer vacation highlights. One of our bright International Students from Holy Trinity High School, Christine Yang, reached out to us to share her summer experience with Equal Voice, an organization supporting gender equality in Canadian politics.

Equal Voice was founded in 2001 to help women and gender-diverse individuals succeed in Canadian politics. The organization has multiple regions, and their Ottawa-based chapter coordinates many events to increase awareness for their cause. Equal Voice National Capital Region (NCR) invited 16 high school students to participate in a four-hour simulated City Council meeting in May called They Govern.

Holy Trinity’s own, Christine Yang, was welcomed as a participant. She was so excited to learn that she was the only representative from her school and the only International Student in the group.

Christine was thrilled to have this experience with Canadian politics through Equal Voice NCR. She attended the event with her opinion and position prepared on two important topics impacting the City of Ottawa: climate change and affordable housing and homelessness.

The two co-chairs of Equal Voice NCR, Lydia, and Hilary, thanked Christine for attending the event by sending her a gift box with a handwritten letter inviting her to further participate in the organization. Christine has now joined the Equal Voice NCR Steering Committee and is eager to continue to work with their team to inspire change in Canadian politics.

Christine’s experience with Equal Voice NCR is a great example of how students in the Ottawa Catholic School Board experience Deep Learning and develop the competency of citizenship. Building deep learning skills and competencies is an integral part of our approach to education, so we are inspired by stories highlighting our student’s journeys towards building a strong career path. Establishing a solid foundation of citizenship helps influence the leaders of tomorrow.
