Discover the Joy of Hosting: The Lasting Impact of Cross-Cultural Friendships

Hosting an international student with the Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) goes beyond providing accommodation; it involves creating a dynamic cultural exchange that benefits both the student and the host family. By opening your home, you offer a unique opportunity for young people to experience Canadian culture, improve their language skills, and receive support and guidance as they adapt to a new country. In return, your family gains insight into new cultural traditions and the opportunity to form lifelong friendships.

From Ottawa to Poland

The bond formed between international students and their host families often extends beyond the hosting period. Adele Srutek, OCSB Vice-Principal at St. Martin de Porres School, experienced this firsthand when her family hosted a student from Poland. This connection blossomed into a lasting friendship, culminating in a heartfelt visit to Poland. Adele recounts, “Their family was so welcoming, and they brought us to many special places in Poland; a highlight was our day of kayaking together.” For Adele, hosting an international student has been a blessing, enriching her children’s lives and fostering a global perspective.

A memorable experience in Germany

Lucy Minkova, the Coordinator of the OCSB International & Indigenous Languages Program, has hosted several international students. Each experience has brought her new insights and lasting memories. One of these students was Anna from Germany, who left a significant impact on Lucy’s family during the 2021-2022 school year. Their ongoing friendship led to a delightful visit to Germany, where they enjoyed family walks in Marnau, explored a quaint castle, and visited a town known for its Passion Play performed every ten years. Lucy reflects, “We even had fun going to a Christmas shop in June!” Hosting has allowed Lucy to learn as much from her students as they have from her, creating a cycle of continuous cultural exchange and friendship.

Be a Host, Make a Difference

Hosting an international student is more than just a generous act; it’s an enriching experience that fosters mutual growth and understanding.
